Optimal Pigouvian intervention in waste management with urban unemployment

Naoki Kakita, Kazuyuki Nakamura

Abstract

Developing countries often face the dilemma of balancing unemployment with environmental protection. Waste management in particular is a major concern in such countries. We consider optimal waste management policy in the presence of urban unemployment following Harris and Todaro (1970). Our results suggest that the optimal policy should be designed to reflect regional characteristics and the technological aspects of disposal.
