Pharmaceutical R&D project management under risk

Yin Huang, Xiamiao Li, Dapeng Liu

Abstract

Market pressure and tough socio-political regulations are among the current factors that are changing the way in which the pharmaceutical business is operated. Pharmaceutical companies are faced with the question of the best use of limited resources available to obtain the highest possible profit from a potential product portfolio. Pharmaceutical products differ somewhat from other products. In this sense, pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) project management under risk is crucial for quick responses to changing market trends. For this reason, a great deal of recent research has focused on R&D projects. This article reviews the current literature on R&D project management under risk for medical and pharmaceutical products. The review discusses some interesting open research questions in this field, and points out new directions for future research.
